 | The Ant and the Grasshopper: The Yeshiva Tuition Crisis |
 There a classic tale about an ant and a grasshopper that teaches an important moral lesson. Today, the jewish version of the ant and grasshopper portrays a scary lesson.
The classic story:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long,
building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and
plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
Moral of the story: Be responsible for yourself!
The New Jewish Version:
Boy ant meets girl ant and it's true love. They get married, they both work hard and put their wedding money and savings together to buy a modest house with a reasonable/affordable mortgage. They furnish it with anything reasonable they can find. The house isn't perfect but every few years they save up to repair or improve it. Through this they keep saving.
Similarly the grasshoppers meet and get married. They live lavishly with their new freedom and wedding money. When it comes time buy a house they get a nice one putting down the remainder of their wedding money- there's a big mortgage but they figure everyone else in the neighborhood can afford it, so can they. They fill their nice house with nice furniture and fix it up nicely because some parts of it are "ugly" etc.
Fast forward a few years later of this continued pattern. The ants have a modest mortgage, equity in their house and some savings. They will pay full tuition. The grasshoppers show their huge mortgage and lack of savings and get a tuition break.
Of course the more grasshoppers there are, the higher the tuition is for the ants. as tuition will increase as the people paying full price decreases...
Moral of the story: Others are responsible for you and it's to your disadvantage to be responsible for yourself!?!
